Are you an ECR?
What is it - what do I know about it and what do you know so we can help each other?

We start today’s post with a poll:
Up until a few days ago, I would have chosen the first option in the poll. Then, I asked ChatGPT to give me a short definition of an ECR. Here is what it whipped up for us:
An Early Career Researcher (ECR) is someone who is in the initial stages of their academic or research career, typically within 5–10 years of completing their PhD or highest degree. This includes postdoctoral researchers, assistant professors, or equivalent roles who are building their publication record, research profile, and professional network.
I was - you guessed it - WRONG! And then I started thinking: aren’t you already a researcher during your PhD, in your very early career? Aren’t you in the initial stages of your academic (or any other) career getting ready to finish your PhD?
Therefore, I need some time to do my own research (see what I did there?) as to what an ECR really is - and I will get back to you next week.
Meanwhile, if you know more about it than I do, please feel free to comment and give us what you know about the topic! And a huge thank you!
The Music Highlight
Since June is just around the corner (I hope it will not be too hot, I am not really a hot weather person as I really suffer) and Jamiroquai is one of the best artists out there, I send you his voice singing about seven days in sunny June!
I am absolutely sure that this article will clarify many things for those who are interested! Excellent work as always, Vicky!
Hi Vicky and happy weekend. I always wondered about what an 'ECR' is, so I am glad that you brought this up. I just now did a bit of extended research, too, to see if I could find anything about whether an ECR included those in their PhD stage. I found only this so far: https://www.ukri.org/what-we-do/developing-people-and-skills/esrc/early-career-researchers/. I like your music highlight and have not ever heard of that group. :)
