Hi everyone!
Soooo…this has been a thought of mine for some time now. You know, creating a book club for PhDs. Sometimes it helps to read along with other people. I have been in book clubs before, but sometimes we felt pressure to finish a book by a certain time, or we didn’t like the book that was chosen.
I would like a book club that is not strict with deadlines; one that I could be reading a book and someone else would choose another one, but we would be reading in company and sharing what we are reading.
Life can be so unpredictable at times (I realised this in April with some things that came up in my family, so it was a pretty bad month and I couldn’t do much of anything really) so I would like this to be a nice and chill experience for anyone who would like to participate.
This is how I would imagine it - and let me know if you have any other ideas about what you would like!
The Meet the PhDs Book Club
It is absolutely free of charge to join, as I know a lot of us have a lot of expenses with family, studies and so much more.
You get a special electronic membership card with your name on it!
You don’t need to buy a lot of books - we borrow, find bargains, support each other.
We don’t all need to be reading the same book - however, we can share what we are reading and we can recommend books to each other.
I am thinking of having a YouTube live once a month on my channel, maybe towards the end of the month, so we can share what we are reading.
The books can be generally about doing a PhD, or anything related to our research that might help someone else, or just be an interesting topic to learn about!
Every now and then I will hold a raffle for a gift card or book for one lucky member!
What do you think? Would you join a club like this - and do you have any other ideas as to how you would like this book club to be?
The Music Highlight
Towards the end of the pandemic, I was still living in Switzerland and I saw a huge poster in my city that Billy Idol was coming to Zurich for a concert! I have to tell you that I absolutely loooove him and his style was so original for the 80s - and still is!
Unfortunately, I decided against going to the concert because I was still worried about the outgoing pandemic and people were still getting very sick, so being in a crowded place terrified me.
But here he is!
Hi Vicky, what a great idea - count me in, please! Sounds like just the kind of low-pressure connection that would add joy rather than pressure to my life :)
I wish I could build you a whole library 📚 our amazing Vicky!!!
